Despite major treatment advances over the past five decades, cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children in the U.S. In fact, it is responsible for more child deaths than all other diseases combined. Phoenix Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) is a destination center for excellence. Ranked 35th in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report, it is Arizona’s largest program for children living with cancer and blood disorders.
AZ Kidz support makes it possible for Arizona children to get world-class cancer care close to home.
Led by world-renowned pediatric cancer researcher Mario Otto, MD, PhD, CCBD is Arizona's largest pediatric cancer program. Philanthropy makes it possible to give every patient the best care from the moment of diagnosis to the completion of treatment and beyond. Thanks to your generosity, Phoenix.
The behavioral health crisis among Arizona’s youth has skyrocketed in recent years, fueled by the challenges of the pandemic. Increasing rates of suicide, the growing impact of adverse childhood experiences, the rise in gun violence, and the ongoing challenges of eating disorders, childhood depression, anxiety and autism spectrum disorders, to name a few, have stretched already insufficient behavioral health resources for children. Phoenix Children’s is working to address these challenges through a plan to fill systemic gaps and deliver coordinated, comprehensive mental healthcare across the entire care continuum. But building the system requires hefty financial investments. Support for this initiative provides an unparalleled opportunity to make a meaningful difference in improving the mental health of our region’s young people.
An honor walk, also known as a hero walk, is a ceremonial event in a hospital that honors a patient who has donated their organs. It usually happens when the patient is being moved to the operating room or an ambulance before their organs are removed. The walk is often held for patients who are on life support and have no chance of survival. The honor walk is a way to pay tribute to the patient's life and their selfless act of donation. It gives family members a chance to say their final goodbyes to their loved one and to reflect on their gift. The walk can also be a moment for people to acknowledge the impact the patient's decision has had on others.
Caring for a child with a serious illness or injury can be a full-time job. Often it means having to take unpaid time off work or even a complete job loss, further compounding stress on the entire family.
Phoenix Children’s Patient and Family Assistance Fund is instrumental in supporting families experiencing hardship. The economic challenges increase for families caring for a child with serious illness or injury. Time off work, nights away from home, frequent travel and medical bills all add to the pressure of helping a child heal. Phoenix Children’s remains a beacon of hope and healing during these challenging times. No family should have to choose between a child's health and meeting basic needs.
